Sexual abuse of young people is a growing problem. How can schools and teachers help these young people? Our research describes teachers’ knowledge of the phenomenon of sexual abuse of the young, the level of their interest in the issue, the assistance they offer or would offer to victims, and their emotional reactions to them. A sample of 100 secondary school teachers answered tests of relevant knowledge and level of interest, along with questions on their behaviour and viewpoints. On average, each teacher knew of 1.3 cases of sexual abuse and was fairly well informed about, and very interested in the issue. They have difficulty detecting instances of such abuse, but believe themselves capable of assisting victims. Those who had previously helped young victims had a strong need to assist, sympathized with the victim, and felt resentment against the abuser. Only a minority of teachers reported cases to the authorities.
