Syntactic Complexity in Narration and Argument at Three Grade Levels

On a conçu cette étude dans le but de déterminer (1) l'effet du mode de discours (c'est-à-dire la narration et la discussion) sur la complexité syntaxique des rédactions des étudiants de sixième, dixième, et douzième année; et (2) de voir s'il y avait des différences significatives dans la complexité syntaxique des compositions entre la sixième et la dixième année et entre la dixième et la douzième année, selon le mode de discours utilisé. Pour les fins de cette étude, on a choisi au hasard 240 étudiants parmi quatre écoles élémentaires et deux écoles secondaires de la ville de Brandon au Manitoba. À chacun des niveaux académiques le temps (unité « T ») nécessaire à la discussion fut significativement plus long que celui de la narration. La différence entre la discussion et la narration à l'intérieur d'un même niveau était plus grande que la différence entre deux niveaux, soit de sixième et douzième année en ce qui a trait aux deux formes de discours. Quant à la discussion, le temps nécessaire (mesuré par l'unité « T ») s'est accru significativement entre les niveaux de sixième et dixième année et entre ceux de dixième et douzième année. Quant à la narration, cependant, cet accroissement était significatif entre la sixième et la dixième année, mais sans importance entre la dixième et la douzième année. On discute enfin des implications de cette étude sur la recherche en développement syntaxique.
