De moins en moins de responsables féminines d'établissements scolaires au Québec: les directrices adjointes du primaire

The proportion of female education administrators, whether principals or vice-principals and at whatever level, has been decreasing since 1960. The exploratory research described here aimed to find out (1) how far the private lives of female vice-principals differ from those of their male counterparts; (2) whether women vice-principals have as much access to resources as men; and (3) if women vice-principals do their work in the same way as men. Women vice-principals live alone more often than men, have fewer children, and are relatively uninvolved in the activity of staff or public committees. Further, women vice-principals spend more time in reflection and are more likely to communicate with teachers, with non-instructional staff, with pupils, and/or with parents. They maintain closer relations with the school board and a closer watch over material and financial resources than do male vice-principals. Women vice-principals do secondary, partly hidden tasks that partly contradict the responsibilities of administrative work.
