This article reports the results of a 1982-83 study of all school principals in Quebec concerning their job satisfaction. The turbulent social context of the time and the goals of the government gave rise to a variety of expectations but also to considerable anxiety, and this had an impact on the various sectors and areas of the educational system. The article examines the impact on job satisfaction for the principals according to the sectors (public or private, anglophone or francophone) to which they belonged. It was found that belonging to one or the other sector influenced satisfaction regarding several aspects of their work and that the principals in the francophone private sector had the highest job satisfaction while those in the public sector were the least satisfied. The many written comments from the principals helped to complete and colour the statistical results of this survey.
