structured peer group modalities, persistence, graduate studentsAbstract
The identification of social factors that contribute to graduate student persistence has highlighted inherent limitations in individual supervision. Consequently, various structured peer group modalities (SPGM), including group supervision, group mentoring or tutoring, and structured writing groups, have been proposed as alternatives to, or supplements for, individual supervision. Using the PRISMA protocol, 13 articles, predominantly qualitative, were identified to investigate the effects of SPGM participation on graduate student persistence, explore potential explanations for these effects, and contribute to the development of a preliminary model reflecting these mechanisms. As a result, the benefits of SPGM on graduate students’ persistence were categorized into three components: academic, social, and psychological support. Certain characteristics of SPGM were identified as influencing variables, such as the group characteristics, the structure of the meetings, and the nature of the content discussed. The review concludes with a discussion on the current use of SPGM in academic settings and provides recommendations for future research, notably the need for more quantitative studies.
