Abstract

The author analyzes scores on comprehension and reading speed of two groups of children in grades 5 and 6. All 483 subjects read material from two types of text categorized under B.J.F. Meyer's taxonomy. The texts were either in an original version, or in a version modified to allow measurement of the effects on readability of “type of text” and of redundance. Results showed that both type of text and redundance influence both comprehension and reading speed. Further, these two factors influence one another and interact with general reading ability to affect reading speed. Application of Henry's formula produced readability indices showing variation according to type of text when variables considered in Henry's formula were held constant. The results have implications for reading pedagogy, and for research on textual taxonomies and their effects on readability.
