Teachers’ Predictive Capacity and Empathy in Relation to Children’s Self-Concept
Keywords:
teacher empathy, self-concept, moral education, teacher–student relationshipsAbstract
The decoding ability of thirty-four teachers of moral education was found to correlate highly with their capacity to anticipate pupils’ responses on a self-concept test. Empathic teachers tended to overestimate their pupils’ self-concept, and less empathic teachers tended to underestimate them. We did not conclude that empathic teachers, as identified by decoding and predictive tests, consistently behave with empathy. Classroom climate does not always encourage empathic behaviours, and we do not know what empathy means in school. Research is needed to find a more satisfactory operational definition of empathy in education.
