Most museums offer special programs for school groups. However, a lack of evaluation in the area of educational museum activities prevents our determining the type of visit which should be used with a particular school clientele. This article presents the results of research carried out with 162 students from Grade 5 who participated in a museum visit. Two programs of museum activities were prepared and tested within the framework of social science teaching — a guided tour and a so-called alternative visit where personal guides were used. Within the study, it seemed that the alternative visit, when compared with a guided tour, favoured social science learning as well as the development of positive attitudes towards the museum. However, neither of the two forms of visit fostered positive attitudes towards the social sciences.
