The Effects of Sex on Careers within Education: Implications for a Plan of Action

Une enquête a été menée auprès de 2885 enseignants du niveau secondaire de toutes les régions de l’Ontario. Les données recueillies portent sur les variables suivantes: caractéristiques démographiques, responsabilités familiales, importance accordée à la carrière, diplômes obtenus, performance au travail, encouragements reçus, demandes d’emploi effectuées et poste obtenu. Des analyses de régression multiple montrent que la variable sexe a un effet indépendant sur chacune des autres, incluant le poste obtenu. On constate en effet que les enseignantes sont en général moins qualifiées que leurs confrères et qu’à diplôme égal, elles ont moins de chance qu’eux d’être promues. Ces résultats soulignent la nécessité d’élaborer des programmes d’action qui visent à la fois les politiques de formation et de promotion des commissions scolaires et les activités des enseignantes elles-mêmes, afin qu’elles se préparent à assumer des fonctions de responsabilité.
