The role of Canada’s teachers as the core of public education is being recognized from coast to coast to coast on World Teachers’ Day October 5.
The Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) is marking the occasion to highlight the importance and unwavering commitment of teachers both in and outside of the classroom.
“As teachers, we have a tremendous responsibility to help students understand and learn about the world around them,” says CTF President H. Mark Ramsankar. “Events like World Teachers’ Day allow us to reflect on the critical role that we as individual teachers and the profession as a whole play in the education system.”
World Teachers’ Day, the annual initiative that heightens awareness and appreciation of the teaching profession, is the one day to acknowledge teachers’ dedication to preparing children and youth for the future.
“In Canada, we are privileged to live in a society where many resources are available for children to develop a host of academic and interpersonal skills, but there is always room for improvement,” states Ramsankar. “I thank Canadian teachers for the work they do each day and we can take pride in the fantastic work being done in public schools all across our country.”
The work of Canada’s teachers often extends beyond the country’s borders to contribute to development and education policy. The CTF’s participation in ventures like Project Overseas and international summits help ensure that Canadian teachers help raise global pedagogical standards.
As a proud Canadian teacher, Ramsankar emphasizes that “as individual members of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation through our Member organizations, teachers strive to consistently deliver the highest quality public education to students. In the busyness of day-to-day routines, World Teachers’ Day provides an important opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been and determine where we’re going, in terms of educating the next generation of leaders.”
World Teachers’ Day was first held in 1994 to acknowledge the joint UNESCO and International Labour Organization signing of the Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. This year’s theme focuses on viewing teachers as the heartbeat of public education.
