Results of the 1978 British Columbia Science Assessment

Abstract

The 1978 British Columbia Science Assessment was part of the ongoing provincial learning assessment program. Science achievement tests were administered to almost all British Columbia public school students in Grades 4, 8, and 12. Questionnaires on various aspects of the teaching of science, including instructional practices, were completed by a sample of elementary teachers and secondary science teachers. An instrument designed to measure attitudes towards science and scientists was administered to a sample of Grades 7, 9, and 11 students. Results are reported for the following goals: (1) understanding concepts, (2) processes, (3) application, (4) safety, (5) scientific literacy, and (6) attitudes.
